In this video, we conduct a thorough review of what we think is the best thunderbolt 3 sock on the market today, the CalDigit TS3 Plus.
Thunderbolt 3 is an amazing technology that can do just about anything, but that can be a double edged sword. The hope with Thunderbolt 3 is that you could use a single port to connect multiple devices by daisy chaining them together. This sounds pretty great, except not every Thunderbolt device can daisy chain, and the ones that can are typically quite expensive.
This is why computer electronic manufacturers have started making docks and hubs to unravel the interwoven abilities of Thunderbolt 3. Essentially they can turn a single Thunderbolt 3 port into an array of dedicated ports, each with a more specific purpose.
Another challenge has to do with the fact that Thunderbolt 3 uses the USB-C connector type. With so many devices utilizing the newer USB-C connection, the demand for USB-C ports is high. Consumers do have the option to purchase a simple USB-C hub to turn one USB-C port into many, however while you can use a Thunderbolt 3 port for USB-C devices, Thunderbolt devices are not compatible with USB-C ports. So before you buy a USB-C hub, you better be sure you don’t need Thunderbolt 3 compatibility from that particular port.
Thankfully there is one Thunderbolt 3 dock out there that solves all of these issues by providing Thunderbolt 3 ports as well as dedicated USB-C ports. This prevents your USB-C devices from tying up your much more versatile Thunderbolt 3 ports.
